Henry Surtees, 18, the son of motorsport legend John Surtees has been killed after being struck by a wheel which flew off a competitor's car during a Formula Two race at Brands Hatch.......

I watched John Surtees race way back when, and always liked his style. This was one of those freak accidents that a few milliseconds one way or the other and we wouldn't be talking now. So much potential as a young person just getting started in life and it ends tragically.

BTW, I just heard that the last WWI British soldier, Harry Patch, just died at 111 years old.

That is tragic. Very saddened to learn this.

Yes, likewise!! I heard the news while watching the practice for the Hungarian GP. When Massa was hit by the errant spring off Ruben's car! What a shock!!! I will never forget the day his father John died at Monaco either!! So VERY sad!!

Mike, John Surtees is 75 and still kicking.
This is a photo of John and Henry.

Alberto Ascari in 1955 and Paul Hawkins in '65 are the only two drivers to end up in the harbour in a GP.

You're probably thinking of Lorenzo Bandini in '67 (there is a You Tube video). It was a fiery crash that took his life. Surtees and Bandini had been Ferrari teammates, but by '67 Surtees had left to go with Honda.
John Surtees had a really bad accident at Mosport while testing a Lola T70 in 1965. I remember Autoweek reporting the accident, stating his racing future was uncertain.

Thank You Jay!!! It WAS Bandini! (Wow!! how memory fades! ) and it WAS a fiery crash :eeek: !...and Surtees WAS his teammate  !...and it WAS '65! (might explain the memory loss! )...and it was James Garner who wound up in the drink (in the movie!) :jester:

It all comes back to me now! :smirk:
Now, what was I doing?...Where was I going? :jester:
