saab 900 clutch replacement

i purchased an old saab 900 for the daughter. engines are similar to my beloved TR7 in an odd way. reading the shop manual i saw that they had a unique way to replace the clutch disc, pressure plate and throughout bearing. you don't have to break apart the engine and tranny. I haven't tried it so I don't know if it is easier. But, I wonder if the hydraulic through out bearing could be used in other applications?

The "odd way" is they mounted it basackwards! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

yeah, that's what I noticed first off.

That throw out bearing and slave cylinder design is used in some Ford truck applications, and is used in many racing applications, notably the Tilton stuff. It works well, but if it only needs servicing, it can be a pain.

I don't suppose you need an inexpensive, brand new set of winter wheels for that car? I recently bought a set and got the wrong bolt pattern. They fit a 1988 or later year model. PM if interested.

Nothing odd there, Triumph designed the slant engine, Saab payed. After several years of exclusivity, Triumph also got rights to use the engine they designed. Of course by the time yours was built, it had undergone some significant changes but the basic layout remained.

Interestingly, Triumph also built cars (the 1300 FWD) with the "strange" FWD layout. I wonder if the Saab engineers were looking over Triumphs shoulders when they came up with the the trans design.

i just remembered my mom's old peugot had a slant inline four also!? same engine family?
