The book suggests doing it on a yearly basis, but I've never cleaned mine, except as part of a minor rebuild. Installing the domes will usually screw up the jet centering as well, so be sure to check afterwards. Since they are all metal, any kind of solvent should be fine. But oil the rod when you put them back together.
Earlier versions of Practical Hints suggested slightly overfilling the dampers (filling to the top of the rod without the plunger installed) every 6000 miles. The plunger will displace some of that, which can then slowly seep down the rod to lubricate it and eventually get sucked harmlessly into the engine. But it also means you'll find traces of oil inside the piston.
