Does anyone know the rules about running plates from the year your car was registered? I seem to remember reading something about this and am interested in doing it if its possible.
I guess a call to my DMV is in order /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
Yes, you register your car as a Classic or Collector car. It's a lifetime registration, you have to check with your state about the plate rules & regs. In my state they call it a "retired plate".
Dunno about SC, but here in KY we can display a vintage tag from year of manufacture, or a replica of such tag. Let me know if you need the name of the place that makes replica tags.
It looks like my state is a little behind on this. Apparently the law is up for vote in our state house so it may be some time before I can run a tag from 1960.
I have an actual 1959 Florida plate on my car. The rules are simple. The tag must be from the year of manufacture of the car. 1959 tag on my 59 AH. I had to send the tag to Tallahassee to be "authenticated" and a check was made to be sure the number is not in circulation on a newer tag. I was given a egistration sticker to put on the tag and away we go. $20.00. Looks cool and quite a bargin!
From what I undestand here. You have to get a regular tag and registration. Then if you want to put on a tag from the year of manufacture you can, but you have to keep the current tag in the car and show it if necessary. The car has to be over 35 years old from manufacture date and you don't have to get an inspection either.
Ontario allows vintage plates to be used as valid plates, as long as you can find some where the letter combo isn't already in use. Pre-1973 only, so my Midget is out! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif The fee is ridiculous tho, over $200.
I think my dad has a 1971 nc tag in hsi basement. I'm gonna look for it. I wonder, since its not really a valid registered tag that is bing used and you have the valid one inside, does the vintage plate even have to be from the state you are in?
Green Hornet, where did you find the 59 Fl. tag? I would like to find one for my car too!!! PS We should get together some time, you are right in the 'hood!! I have inlaws in Jensen Beach! I will have to drive up there some time when Ole BugI gets back on the road!
