running rough / missing

I have a 74 midget that is running rough and seems to be missing. I think I tracked the problem to a fouled spark plug. The plug was coated in oil. I am concerned that this is the result of a bigger problem. Any ideas would be very helpful.

Only one plug fouled? I'd replace the wires and cap and plugs and see if the problem is still there before continuing. You might also check your valve train to make sure that exhaust valve is moving.

What about dist. cap?

Haven't check the cap. Didn't think that would affect the plug as it is not connected to the engine block. i was think more along the lines of a bad gasket. But then again, I don't know too much about engines.

If the cap is OK, and the valve is not sticking, then you might look at the possibility of a broken ring. Have you done a compression test? Is the car using alot of oil?

I have not done a compression test. It burns oil, but nothing outrageous. I may burn a quart for every 80-100 miles or so.

That is quite a bit of oil. I'd suspect that you have ring/piston damage in that cylinder. I'd go ahead and do a compression check across all for cylinders.
