Our BN1 runs on a little when the ignition is turned off.

Question is..Does the ignition require advancing or retarding?

I have the same problem and have tried most everything with no luck. That does not answer your question though.

This is from another forum by another author:

"The dieseling, as I understand it, is the ignition of fuel in the hot engine. Among the ways to stop it are to cut the fuel or press the choke flap completely closed. That is what some of the later anti-dieseling things did. I suspect that you may be dieseling because the engine is running too hot due to either too much spark advance or a too-lean condition. Excess pressure in the fuel line or a badly seated needle valve would allow gas to spill into the intake and vaporize, then burn.

Try backing the timing off a tad and using part of a tank of mid-grade. Other guys will have more sophisticated observations, but that is where I started. And I cured it."
 
A sharp edge on a spark plug or on any carbon in the cylinder head will also cause dieseling. Also if your idle speed is too high.

Since the spark is turned off when you turn off the ignition, I wouldn't expect timing to have any effect.
 
One other thing that can affect it, if you have idle set with a known good tach, is an aftermarket cooling fan.
If it is not wired correctly, i.e. a relay that for sure drops it out of all the elctrics when the key is "off", the motor becomes a generator, and as it spins down will back-feed power into the grid, and keep it running, especially if it's on the "ign" side of the switch.
 
Is there a chance that worn points could be the cause ?I don't know, it's just something I heard a long time ago.
 
Not a cure but effective. After turning ignition off, let the clutch out with the transmission in gear and the brake on. Engine will die straight away.

Sorted !!!

Here's what I did................I undid the distributor clamp and moved the distributor to gain max revs at tickover, lightly tightened the clamp and went for a drive.

Well it pincked like mad so I retarded the timing untill the pinking disappeared.

Now the car runs better than before and no running on.
