Yeah-- I'm confused too! This is my TR3 at idle. sounds fine but a little asthmatic cough comes out every couple of seconds. Too rich? Funny exhaust? Kinda embarassing at the local drive in where all the cool vintage cars hang out.
 
Sorta sounds like my TR4 before I changed the bush terminal lead and points in the distributor. Seems every so often a cylinder would not receive a spark and make a hesitaional sound. Fresh parts cured mine.
 
I'd say TR4 is probably right. Pop off your distributor cap look at your contacts in it and check out your plug wires. Its probably something really simple like that.
