I am in the process of replacing the rubber end caps that fit the furry tube-seal on my BJ8 and they are confusing. The insides have an enclosure that looks like something should fit in it and there is no slit for the wind screen frame to fit into (also the piece mounted onto the wood over the door has a similar fin). It seems like I replace them every 3 years and have never figured them out. In the past I have cut out the separator and cut a slit for the metal fins.

Yes it is a bit of a Rubik's Cube when you look at it, but the rubber end cap does fit. I bought the good Bristleflex fuzzy seals from MacGregor (excellent quality and fit) and rubber caps from Moss.

The large rubber tube of the fuzzy seal fits in the large opening of the rubber end cap. For the small opening of the rubber end cap, you may have to pry open the "fuzzy" part(it's really a piece of metal covered in velour) of the seal in order to get that smaller "tang" on the rubber cap to fit in. Then just bend it back to close it up. I used a bit of clear silicone goo to keep the end cap in place because they typically get loose and fall out.

Hope you can follow this....keep a glass of scotch handy. Helps to keep you philosophical about the whole process.

If the cap covers the large fuzzy tube it must be cut to fit the chrome fin of the wind screen, is that correct? This fin is what the Bristleflex clips onto.
 
Yes.
By the way, the rubber end caps do not fit the reproduction furflex nor Bristleflex as good as the original bulb furflex. The orginal furflex was much larger and its size filled and fit the end cap better.

While reading your post I remember thinking wouldn't it be better to use a black "shring tubing" to fit around all?

Just curious.

Funny you should mention the use of shrink wrap as an alternative.

Some time ago, after replacing my original door and top seals with Moss product and also ordering a full set of end caps (not cheap), I found the caps just did not fit properly and often detached (even after gluing). One day while working on my top, I came across some rather large shrink wrap a friend had given me. Since I was never able to use the end caps, I decided to try the wrap on the ends of the seals and it has been on the car for the past 4 years. On those ends requiring cut-to-fit, I applied a dot of glue to keep the unsupported ends in place.

One issue however. I was unable to find a proper fitting material to close the ends and could only come up with cutting and gluing a thin piece of black plastic to the ends. The wrap does give the finished appearance of end caps and I did enjoy the challenge, however, it would have been better if my ordered end-caps fit properly in the beginning.
