Now that i,ve incensed half our members ........LOL My 1948 Rover 75 P3 has lost full time use of 4th gear........It works sometime and others jumps out of gear back to neutral....At first when i pulled the cover off the gearbox found the selector arm was skipping over the gear selector, thus not fully engaging 4th but i think i,ve fixed that and still no sucess...........anyone with any such experience with there gearboxes or any suggestions .... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/canpatriot.GIF

Hello Ken,
did you find a fault with the gear selector or did you 'make it fit better'?. The reason I ask is could the bearings on the mainshaft be badly worn dropping the gear out of full contact with the selector.
I don't know the Rover gearbox, is it a synchromesh box?, straight or helical cut gears? I suspect you will be looking for worn bearings, weak or broken detent mechanisms.
Sorry to be so vague.
Alec
