Hi all, I have an MGB-GT V8 (original, factory-produced that way), that has had a gearbox swap to the Rover 5-speed that was used in the Rover cars with that same 3.5-liter Rover V8 engine. I'm looking for a source for a similar, rebuilt gearbox to replace mine. Other than getting one from overseas, which would probably entail sticker-shock shipping charges, does anyone know of a source for these? Thanks.

Oh, and while you're at it... Tell 'em they need to be supporting vendors!
 
There was one on Ebay last week, as well as the engine. The location was in Ottawa, Ontario. I will check and see if I can find it again. It didn't sell the first time perhaps it was re-listed.

Thanks for the lead, I sent him email. Also got a good tip about a place called TSI in Pandora OH. (How approipriate, a British car parts place in a city named Pandora -- Pandora should be the nickname of many 'a British car, no?)

Yes, and there are many many more TR7 parts cars then there are TR8 parts cars. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

But, not all the TR7's had 5-speeds....& for some reason I remember Glenn Towry telling me there was a reason I didn't want to use the TR7 trans on my V8 car but wanted to use the TR8 instead.....but, for the life of me, can't remember what it was.
 
I have two tr7's and a tr8, one 7 has the four speed and the other the 5 speed. The differentials are different with the different gear boxes. I think that all the lt77 gear boxes use the differential, with different ratios.other than a few hardware issues (fulcrum pin, throw out bearing, bell housing) I don't think there is any difference between the 5 speeds as used by Tr7, TR8, SD1, Rangie, etc...

True, but there were only about 2700 TR8's made total and more than 115,000 TR7's made with roughly half, maybe a little less being five speed cars.

For those interested. The "Rover" five speed was actually designed by "Triumph" engineers. I put them in quotes because it was all done during the BL days when they were really all one company but management was nearly all from the Triumph side so the Triumph people kept most of the jobs. At least that is from I have gathered from the various readings in various places.

Could all be hooey too.

The TR-7 & Tr-8 5 speeds are the same. The only difference is the bellhousing. Anytime you are looking at a used one, be sure to check the back of the input (1st motion) shaft, & the front of the main shaft. These transmissions use a fiber oil pump which is prone to fail. If it does or the trans is run when it is low on oil, it will burn up the bearings on the cluster gear and the front of the mainshaft, & parts are expensive.
