I was helping out on the Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Trial last night between 1am and 4am. I was checking the cars in at Edinburgh Airport after they had driven 9 or 10 hours up from London.
I was pleased to be driving home to my bed in my TR3 once I had finished, but those guys were on their way to John O'Groats, and then they had the length of the country back to Lands End and back to London for Sunday evening. In fact they are just leaving Scotland now and heading into heavy rain in England!
That's 2,000 miles in 48 hours with only a few stops for half an hour or so. They must be mad!!
112 cars made it to Edinburgh - an amazing variety of Triumphs and two Standard vans. You should have seen the puddles of oil in the car park once they had left!!!

For those paying attention, it appears that the car in the middle photo is a TR4 Dove. :wink:

Was there ever a TR6 coupe version? I seem to recall seeing one in a triumph book once.
 
You don't often hear the words British and Reliability in the same sentence. i guess that is the point of the run though.

Not that I recall but the factory steel hardtop practically transforms a TR6 from a Roadster to a GT. The difference is pretty amazing. Just ask Kodanja. :wink:

I saw your well kitted out TR at Edinburgh and meant to take a picture as we parked up next to you briefly, I might have even spoken to you if you were doing the road books.

Oh man! Great stuff...I am jealous!

We do not have this sort of event in the US (as far as I know).

We *do* have vintage "rallys" with long gentle drives and fancy hotels (and $5000 USD entry fees!), but nothing that has an old crock going 2000 miles in 48 hours.
The Canadians have the uber-cool Targa Newfoundland, but that's more of a street race.

My hat is off to those lads!

Was there ever a TR6 coupe version? I seem to recall seeing one in a triumph book once. [/QUOTE]Nothing on the TR6, but there were a few Dové GTR4As and, reputedly, at perhaps one or more Dové GTR5s.
 
This was certainly no gentle drive, having to take in a mixture of all types of roads from four lane motorways (freeways) down to glorified single track roads, with the need to push on all the time.

The run is usually run every two years, since 1966. More history about it here, RBRR history

It only costs ÂŁ60 ($120) per entrant, but we used around ÂŁ350 ($700) worth of fuel, approx 63 gallons.

This year two Americans came over for the run, one getting a car purchased and prepared in the UK for the run. Also in previous years people have shipped cars over for the event, this year there was a couple of German crews, bringing a TR5 and TR6 and previously a GT6 was shipped over temporally from the USA to do the run.

The only requirement is that you are a member of the club and that you do the run in a Triumph, so you can come over and do the run in 2010 if you like :laugh:

I was helping out in the car park, so hopefully I said hello when you arrived. It was amazing that we didn't run out of parking spaces!
I don't think I could have survived the full 48 hours. I had a 14 hour journey home the previous weekend in my TR from the south west of Ireland and that was quite far enough!
I have great respect for the entrants in the event, especially given the weather and roads that you had to endure.
