Roller release bearing for 1275 Midget

Ok so the motor and tranny are out! My question is should I replace the carbon disk release with the roller release bearing found on Ebay?

Either/or! The purists here will tell you to go with the carbon! I have had equally good performance with either. Depending on how you drive, the roller bearing may last a bit longer (if you like to sit at lights with the clutch depressed), but the cost difference is, to me significant!

get the roller bearing...it appears to be alot
better although i havent really drove mine yet,
but it looks more reliable than the carbon one..
what else are u doing while the motors out?..z

I don't know much, BUT...

how many have had the carbon disc actually FAIL, or WEAR OUT before the clutch did? What do the RACERS use?

Never have, over 30 years of Bugeyes and 100 thousand miles maybe.

the racers use the roller bearing...
i wore out a carbon one, but i was
riding the clutch more because i
had a stickin gearbox issue...
hopefully fixed.....z

The only time I have ever had to be towed home was when a carbon bearing wore right down through the metal housing, but that was more my "maximizing" the life-span of the bearing. When a roller bearing goes bad it will let you know agead of time with a good "bearing howl"!!

Thanks everyone...I will stick with the carbon one. Zimmy as to your question, everything is done my tranny failed so I had to pull the motor again. We are so very close to being complete with a nearly 2 year restoration.
I look forward to meeting some of you in June at the 50 year Aniversary.

I am planning on getting the bearing type next. In the last fourty K miles I have had two of the carbon ones go bad. I think they are the worst design I have seen. One of them only lasted a month However the original one that was in it when I bought the car lasted about 50K miles.

Go figure
Anthony

Anyone know of a supplier for the bearing type. I checked the carbon one that is in mine and sure as crap it is warn flush on the face and it is bad enough that I had to pump the clutch and still had trouble getting it in gear.

Thanks
Anthony

You can find the bearing type on ebay regularly and at a decent price!!

There is at least one on eBay right now. See Item Number 130219485106.

BTW, the seller (NOS Locaters) enjoys a decent reputation amongst their customers. I've bought from them and will again with no qualms. In fact, the same bearing they have listed above is in both of my race cars and will go into my street car if/when I ever decide to pull that engine/trans.

Thanks to everyone that responded. I ordered one off ebay and hopefullly this week I will pull the engine and tranny and get this project behind me. Thanks again for the information

Is there a reason this bearing wouldn't work on a rib case tranny in a 1098?

Remember to change the input shaft pilot bearing in the crank.

well my nieghbors carbon failed rather dramaticly, we pulled the engine and it was totally gone. Nothing but metal to metal on what was left of the housing that holds the carbon t/o. pulled out a bunch of carbon chunks...

anyway he ordered one of the roller style. i had it in my hand the other day and go figure, the housing around bearing is PLAStiC....should i be worried?

Mine is working great! I wasnt sure what to do with the white plastic film on the face so I left it on, but it's working.

i woundnt worry bout it..
the racers are using them!

look at the carbon one,
then look at the roller....
what do u think  ....z
