Is'nt that the same top as fits a Bug Eye?? Windshield frame is the same and I know that you can interchange the hard tops. Will it work???

I'd like to know also if the top for the Midget MKI will fit a bugeye, as I also need a new top!
 
I don't know the answer to this, but if you take a look at the Moss catalog they list two different stock numbers for the Bugeye which are different from the Mark I. It looks like the difference between the two Bugeye types have to do with the way they mount. One uses studs on the windshield frame and one uses a bar mount. I don't know what that means, but it does appear that the Mark I top will not fit on a Bugeye.

When I had my `59 Bug(Frog)eye; It had a "Metal Bar" sewn in across the Front Top to simply put weight on it so as to not "Blow Away" while driving. There were also "2" locations on ea. side of the Windscreen to snap the top down.

Hey Gundy; You had mentioned yesterday that you`d like to get a "Canvas" top for your Bug. This may be something to look into!!

That would be a cloth top I'm thinking about. My vinyl
top is just fine. I did check the linked sale and it appeared to me the tops on sale are vinyl and not listed Bugeye tops.
If it was a Bugeye top I'd buy one just to have a spare.
I think there are two different Mk1 Sprite tops too.

Too bad they dont fit, my bugeye is presently topless, does anyone know where the "metal bar" can be sourced from? I dont see them listed on Moss or VB.
 
Spritenut can most likely tell you the correct dimensions for the steel bar, I have seen this question before on the 'list'.
 
Got my metal bar from Ace hardware in alumn. Used the size that Sprite nut recommended. Works just fine.

Oh yea that bar actually tucks under the top of the windsheld to hold the top on and make it weather proof.
 
Is there anyone listening that can tell me the difference between a Mk1 midget top and the BE top? I would think they would interchange. I have 2 NOS AMCO tops that have shrunk enough so that they will not fit. Too bad since the NOS AMCO top is a real thing of beauty that is no longer available. I have heard of people cutting the bottom off there top bows to make a shrunken top fit but I can't bring myself to do that. Perhaps they could be stretched to fit on a hot enough day but I don't want to fool with that either.
Still looking to replace my upholstery shop home made one but I'm not desperate since it will do the job.

The Amco tops are high quality, if you have one that is in good condition but is too small it can be stretched.
If it tears during the stretching then it was probably too old and dried out to be useful. (or the stretching was too vigorous)
When stretching it do it a bit at a time.
My bows have the retracting springs so they can be made a little shorter.
I hooked the top on the back and over the rollbar without the bows in place then I pulled it to the front and stretched it to attach.
I left it like that for a while (24 hours) then pulled it off the front and put in the bow in it's lower position.
I had to pull pretty hard to get it to hook on the front studs, I didn't bother with the bar. Left it that way for a while then opened the releases on the bow so it applied more pressure.
After another day I tried hooking the front bar around the lip of the wind screen frame, this took some work but I finally got it with the bow in the lower position, then again I released the bows to apply more pressure and stretch it a bit more.
I haven't removed it since, this has been a few months.
It's a heavy duty top and I'm really glad I have it and made it fit.
 
My BE top is an Amco and it is a TIGHT fit.
I put it up on a WARM SUNNY day in the fall
before it gets cold and take it off the first
WARM SUNNY spring day.
If they didn't make that bit where the bow can be dropped
for install I don't think I could get that sucker on
even in summer heat.
