So last summer over here in aus...
I was drivin down a stretch of road on my way to a mates house, Looking in my rear vision mirror i see what looks like a Black MG Come flying up behind me and over takes me...
Looking at it closer I see that it's a Datsun roadster, what cought my attention was a Badge which read "2000" which im guessing is a 2 ltr, 4cyl. I was under the impression the old datto roadsters came from the factory with a 1.6 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
So anyway!
I look closer at the car in the distance and i see it has the number plates [EATSMG]. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif
Remembering I have looked through the NDSOC Concourse webpages and saw his car....

Cought up to him, met him at the lights

I spoke to him at the lights, he actually lives in the same suburb as me. So anyway turns out the car isnt actually his so he didnt know anything about it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

1st gear i took to 47-50 km/hr. Was actually about half a car length in front /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Changed to 2nd, then he caught up, and just started pulling and pulling.... It was all over, he beat me by about 1 1/2 car lengths /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif

Nothing a HOT CAM + Overbore wont fix!

Heh! MGs were never great drag racers, and the gearing of the standard box is terrible. Doesn't matter how fast your engine will go, when you hit that big gap between 2nd and 3rd it's all over. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
And the 2 liter Datsun roadster had a 5 speed in it with perfect gear ratio splits. You never had a chance, mate. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If the guy can shift, there is no way you will beat him on the straight, but given a couple of sharp curves, you might have been able to out corner that less balance car. The Datsun 2000 was fast, but the rear end would come around fairly easily in a tight curve.

Kinda like the race I had in a 67 Vette with a Fury Police car one day...he'd pass me on the straights and I would catch him in the corners...for 6 miles we played leapfrog.

Bruce...did one of those with a Jag XJ6 coming down from Mt. Evans near Denver. Ate me in the straights and I rode his rear end through the curves. It was a hoot and we both were wearing grins after the 17 mile run.

I am surprised that the 5-speed was discussed, but not the fact that the 2000 had a single overhead-cam engine with at least 135 HP, and possibly 150 HP (in dual Solex mode in the U.S. and more in Japan), and a redline at 8000 RPM. Any SR311 driver who can't handle an MGB needs to go back to /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif school!

Good to see you yesterday, John. Not Memorial Park, but a great Conclave nonetheless. Have you heard whether we got to 600 vehicles?
 
A friend (I worked in the pit crew) owned/raced a Datsun 2000 convertible back in the early '80s, raced it in SCCA H Production at Summit Point, Rockingham and a couple of tracks for about two years.

It was modified within SCCA limitations. It was fast, too. We could get 135 MPH in the straights and acceleration was notable. It was as fast as any car in our class. The engine was essentially bulletproof, the gearbox only slightly less so. A great car to drive, very reliable and fun.

In my opinion, it was a very nice looking car as well. They're basically forgotten nowadays. Too bad, the Datsun 2000 was a true driver's car!
