Is the ring light on the lens? Maybe try it off camera above and to the side? Also possibly shoot it through some diffusion or bounce it.

Yep, lens mounted. Likely it would still show up more-or-less as a ringed refraction off-camera. And this one is a bit wimpy in output.
 
Lordv's flash setup, it makes sense. I'll need to play around with some of the things we've got here.

Did a "quick-n-dirty" setup to play with:

First shot with wide open aperture (โˆฑ2.5 +2 for adapter) and available light, DoF at around 15ยฐ from perpendicular is a millimeter or two!

Second one is at โˆฑ22 with the flash dialed down and no diffusion, six inches from the penny. DoF is not bad.
