Ring Gear-question on condition

If that's the worst of the undercut I'd run with it. Maybe get another ring gear and put it on "stand-by".

Just take it off, rotate it about 90° and reinstall it.

I'm putting one in my 948 street rat that's slightly worse.

I'd run it.

Thanks for the thoughts all. I have seen a lot worse. I think i will let it go "as is". I have a feeling an old tired one is more likely better quality than a new one.

If i wanted to remove it and flip/rotate it- would heating it till it can be driven off the way to do it?

Not sure about removal but I have a vague recollection that these gears are directional - I don't think the rounded edge is simply wear, I think they were cut that way.

I won't say one way or another if the original MG flywheel ring gear has beveled edges or not when new. I will say that beveled edges are less common than straight edges on the ring gear teeth. The beveled edge on the starter Bendix is very important as it helps the teeth mesh properly without skipping. Some manufactures, I would say most, use the straight edge tooth, verses beveled. What does change is the pitch of the individual tooth. This is the reason the Bendix and ring gear pitch should match, or excessive wear and noise will occur. To most peoples surprise, if interested, there must be over a hundred different pitches on flywheel teeth alone. It's a manufactures thing. Like getting two engineers to agree on the same project! (grin). Saying that, I see no reason not to turn the ring around and use the other side, if it had straight cut teeth to begin with, but not if they were originally beveled. JMHO. PJ
