Ribcase first gear hub

Hi there,
I'm putting my mainshaft together, is the first gear hub supposed to have play on the mainshaft or held tight between second gear and the rear bearing? I have about an 1/8" of play.

There needs to be movement in the 1/2 hub so that the 2nd gear syncro isn't wearing all the time. The 1/2 shift fork detent keeps it is place once it is all assembled.
