"Ribcage" Transmission

Sorry for the newb question, but I've heard/read several references to a ribcage transmission as a "upgrade" for a BE. What is a ribcage, how does one identify it and why is it better?

My BE does have a 1275, I wonder if the Transmission was also changed out?
 
The ribcase is the later 4-speed transmission that came with all but the 948 motors (I think). It's a bit stouter, with a tighter spread of ratios. If you've got a 1275, you've almost certainly got a ribcase transmission.
 
Yes, like the other Drew said, it's a ribcase tranny. It's called that because it has a casing that is "ribbed" or gusseted in a crosshatch pattern. The smoothcase tranny's are also more difficult to rebuild as there are some custom parts.
 
Look at your tranny through the engine compartment. It will be obvious to see wich one you have. Smooth case or a "waffle" pattern. Smooth cases will not last with 1275. They are pretty common--you probably have one.

Having followed John's amazing rebuild (read: total disassembly of everything to include the unibody!!) of his B, I can't wait for his rejuvenation of the little Bugeye!
 
Sure is nice to see someone else bring one back from the grave.
