Revolting Development ..... {Update}

Saturday I recived a notice from the county in the mail informing me of an unpaid ticket. For the life of me I couldn`t remember getting any tickets for years. So I went to the courthouse today {Monday} to see what was what. They informed me I had a violation of handicapped parking {which B.T.W. is strictly against my principals} I NEVER park in the handicapped zone EVER!
Come to find out this ticket was issued in 2001 {I didn`t even live in Utah in 2001}, I asked which vehicle the ticket was issued to {they didn`t know} I asked who`s signature was on the ticket {again they didn`t know}. Now I have to go see the judge!
I have a sneaking suspicion they can`t produce the ticket. I also know for certain the issuing officer was dismissed from the county police force for drug related offenses. I can definitely prove my residence on the date the ticket was issued was South Texas. I can also prove the day the ticket was issued I was at work in South Texas.
I was told they can issue a ticket to the registered owner of the vehicle with no proof he/she was the occupant the particular day of the alleged offense.
My chances of stuffing this ticket up their .... Never mind ...... down their throats?

Re: Revolting Development

Pretty good, I would say. Since they are not able to produce any evidence that you were the offender (no person, no vehicle, no records, and also cannot produce your accuser, with the evidence that you can bring I think you'll be okay. In addition, what is the statute of limitations on a parking ticket?

Re: Revolting Development

I'd get a list of VIN #'s for all your cars. That should be listed of the ticket (if they ever find it). When you moved to Utah and registered your cars, any outstanding ticket should have popped up at that time.

Re: Revolting Development

Yup, try and find some documentation of each vehicle you owned, it's licence numbers back then, and what state they were registered in... I bet it gets dismissed.

Re: Revolting Development

That was a money source for Chicago for years. They claimed it was because of poor handwriting by the officer writing the ticket. Maybe it was as I do not think I've heard about as many now that they use hand held electronic thingys.

Re: Revolting Development

I went to see the judge today {Tuesday} armed with an extensive array of evidence on my part.
As it tuned out I was correct in assuming they had no evidence {the ticket or issuing officer} The judge dismissed the issue altogether.
I sure am glad I choose to investigate this issue instead of submitting a check for the $140.00 as they suggested in the initial notification letter.
I suspect some of you were correct in assuming this ploy was merely a revenue generating scheme on the county`s part.
I wonder how many other county citizens actually fell for this scheme and sent in their checks without questioning the issue.
What is this world coming to?

Re: Revolting Development

I'm glad things worked out for you. It's just gets me that you have to take time out of you day to correct this bureaucratic garbage. They're all to quick to collect the money, but try to get reimbursed for your time spent straightening out their screw up. :hammer:

Re: Revolting Development

So far as I know, any time the issuing officer is a no-show, case dismissed. I figured you'd walk since going in you knew the officer was no longer on the force. Did you see the thread here about the camera tickets and the scam tickets? This sounds very similar.
