Revisiting carb issues from last summer...

Thanks everyone for all the great advice and resources. I think the bottom line for me is that I just need to observe and interact with someone in the know as we set these things up properly - and take copious notes in the process. Otherwise, I'll screw around with them in my little carbon monoxide dungeon of a garage until 10 weeks from next thursday and still not get it right. I've never been a person who can read about something and then apply that knowledge; I've always needed the apprenticeship experience to really absorb a job/task.

That said, I took the car out yesterday and for a few minutes today, too - and it ran noticeably better. The engine was more responsive, and a lot more peppy than before (well, as a 948 goes, that is). - Even my 8 year old noticed! I have a feeling the new distributor and coil (and advancing the timing) made a big difference. I'm getting just a little of the popping on deceleration though, and it is idling a little higher that I like now that I've tightened down the linkage, but given everything, I'm just happy to be able to get the car out on the highway and drive. Can't wait for the carbs to be sorted out - it will really be nice.

Colortune is the way I HAVE to go, when I'm doing the job alone. Again, from GUNSON... by the way, with the CARBALANCER, as and alternate method, you can pull the ends off the tube and use that as a sound tube.

I think I'm going to take the plunge on the colortune. While I've heard both great reviews and some less enthusiastic ones, at LEAST this would provide some guidance for ballparking a correct mixture. As it is, I'm feeling like I'm just operating on instinct (oh, that sounds pretty good...etc.).

One other question that may or may not be relevant to this issue.

Someone heated up the motor on my car a bit. This is a 948 and compression is averaging about 180 across all cycl, except #3 which is problematic (I'm getting about 160 and shows signs of oil fouling on the plug). Other than these specs, I have no idea what was done to this motor.

Could this be contributing to my problem getting the carbs set up correctly?

Thanks again!

Not at all.

Agree. Those numbers by themselves would say it doesn't affect carb mix/balance.
