Restoring bakelite and plastics

My TR4a ashtray and the protectors behind the window winders are dull and scratched.
It looks as though the resins have "dried" out, so I have tried to polish them up with oily substances as varied as cooking oil, furniture polish and mayonnaise, not much success.
Any suggestions?
Simon.

I've heard that a super fine wet / dry paper will return some gloss to bakelite. A high-quality vinyl protectant has worked well for me to maintain older bakelight fixtures.
