Restoring a TR6

I am restoring a '76 TR6, Feb. 2016 will mark our 2 year anniversary.
The car is back together enough to be drive-able but still a couple of issues that leave me scratching my head. First, the car starts well when cold but after driving just a few miles (4-5), it doesn't want to start. Turns over fine but just won't start unless I keep the gas pedal on the floor.
Also replaced fan with an electric fan and when it comes on the car struggles to idle and will quit running unless I nurse the gas pedal.

Secondly, since this was a "frame-off" restoration I must reassemble the naked door shells and reinstall the door glass. There must be a step by step sequence? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Randy,

I just joined the site because I am thinking of buying a TR6 myself. I am by no stretch of the imagination knowledgeable about TR6's. That being said, here are my thoughts...

Have you checked the fuel pump? Is it a Lucas pump? I have heard that Lucas pumps aren't very good and do cause problems.
On the electric fan issue...could be that the fan motor is pulling more amps than you think, which can cause the alternator to work harder which will cause the engine to bog down at idle. Or possibly an electrical grounding issue.
I have no clue about the doors...sorry

If it is a Petrol injection car, there a number of possiblilities. Check the voltage t the pump when running. Voltage loss is common with the original wiring and you need to run a good quality wire to the pump via a relay . Power direct from the battery via a fuse.
then check the fuel pressure.
if the tuning is set up properly, particularly the fast idle likn and the enriching ling, you should be able to start a hot car with no pedal and about one quarter choke max.

The fan should be wired from the battery via a relay for minimal loss.
Also I found that the original wiring from the alternator to the battery via the starter suffers voltage drop. Put a new heavy wire direct from the alternator to the battery( or a nearby power block with the above pump wire)

If you have the original Lucas pump and the CAV filter, throw them awat and get a more modern pump eg Bosch, and a modern filter, and relocate them both so the fuel runs downhill From the tank to the pump. Otherwise the fuel will heat up and you will get pressure drop and other starting problems. You will not start the car with less than 100 psi, and while you will get this when cold, it will drop a bit after driving, particularly as the fuel warms up.

when the fan cuts in, the fan( I have a very large electric fan for Australian conditions) the rev counter should drop by about 100 rpm only, so you have a tuning problem if the engine dies, or the aformentioned fuel problem.
good luck
Tezza
