Restoration Tip

My assembly is going too slow. Every time I make a little progress I am short a bolt, nut washer, fitting, bushing, etc. I get the part and move to the next part and again I am short something trivial to complete the job. It takes me a couple days to get to the store or order the part. Here's a tip for some one seriously wanting to restore your car.

MOVE!

Move as close as you can to a hardware store, automotive store and if possible a british parts vendor!

If possible!

GOW589, I can remember when I was there too. Now however, Ive probably got a spare car hidden around in the garage.Even so it seems I never have what I really need or I can find one screw but I need two!---Keoke-- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif ---I looked at those nice pictures of your car,but where did you go to the hardware store? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Gary,

My car is off at the paint booth right now, but when I comes back, I'm going to the local fastners place and buying 100 count boxes of all types of stainless, bolts, nuts, washers and screws. I know what you mean about it driving you mad looking for a screw or bolt. Too much wasted time!

I clean and used a lot of the old nut/s bolts with the sand blaster. Some just look better with new hardware and some simply needed new hardware but when your down to assembling your suspension being short one nut, I'll buy it over cleaning it up and painting if it's quicker. It's the elusive rubber this or that that I have to order and wait for that is anoying. I got all new energy bushings for the front suspension. I forgot with the hawk conversion I needed 8 more because it uses upper a-arms.

Not that there isn't anything to do, just hard to stay focused on one aspect.

but it sure is fun!! isnt it? i would just make a list of hardware and then just take it with me. Stainles hardware aint cheap.

Use lots and lots of baggies and mark them what they are when your taking it apart. Took some extra time but was well worth it. Doesn't help after the fact though.

I like to keep a coffee can half full with kerosene handy to put the nuts and bolt into as I remove them...by the time I am ready to reassemble, the crud has been soaked off and the hardwear is lightly lubricated, ready to re reused. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BTW, Home Cheapo is cutting back on their stainless steel selection of hardware...but still have a lot of fine treaded hardware. One of the few places that still carry a decent selection around here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I have every part group bagged. As I assemble the extra parts get moved so I have less arranged in the bags. Quite organized actually. But when you are 2 nuts away from an assembly some times I would wrather pick one up at lunch then sand blast the old ones, get out the paint gun, etc. I get most of them cleaned ahead of time when I can. Some just need replaced anyway.

GEEZE! I got the rubber bushings today. Ready for the weekend instal!!!!Left them at work! If it's not one thing its 10 others!

I got them tonight. The upper a-arms ARE going on this weekend!

John, you priced good SS lately?? very expensive. Most of the stainless steel hardware carried now by the locals can be picked up with a Magnet! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif---Keoke

Many of the stronger SS alloys such as the 400 series are magnetic. The 300 series used for cookware, sinks, & such is non magnetic.

you got parts and you went to work anyway? You gotta get your priorities straight. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

Fortunately for me, my house is only about two miles from an LBC shop. So, I may have taken your advice and not known it at the time. It's a great shop - McLeods British Cars - near Little Rock, Arkansas. He stocks all parts for MGs, Triumphs, and a few others. Plus a lot of used stuff for sale and on consignment.
