TR4/4A Resolving Vibrations

HI there

Posting in case this is useful to anyone. 99% of the time, I drive my car on back country roads at under 50 mph. But, on the parkway over that speed there was a quite obvious vibration throughout the car which would make driving it over 55mph unpleasant and slightly un-nerving. Well, last fall I finally decided to address it. I did three things which appear to have substantially improved it to the point where it is nearly as smooth as driving a modern car at speed.

1. Last fall I removed, disassembled, cleaned and rebuilt my driveshaft. New u-joints. Upon removal, I discovered the driveshaft had been assembled "out of phase" by a prior "British car mechanic" when he replaced a failed u-joint back in 2006. Obviously, I remedied that problem straight away
2. I have 60 spoke wire wheels. I measured radial and axial runout on the wheels. All four wheels are within spec but, I mounted the best ones on the front
3. Balanced wheels using my HF static bubble balance - despite wheels being computer balanced when tires mounted. I found (3) wheels took 1.5oz and (1) took 1.25oz.

I don't know which of the above made the biggest difference but, I am sure they all contributed. Now I can get on the parkway and cruise at 80mph all day.

Bob - thanks a zillion for sharing the details. Too often guys post questions, we give suggestions, then never hear back from them. I had the same driveshaft issue on my TR back in the day - plus three bent steel wheels. The only good vibrations are no vibrations.

Us Connecticut guys have to stick together. I figure the "parkway" you mention is the Merritt.

Thanks Tom,
Appreciate the feedback. To your point, I do make an effort to "close the loop" on any questions I post. I figure it only helps someone else in the future when they search a similar problem on the forum. Isn't that 99% the value of BCF?

And, yes, nail on the head. Parkway = Merritt Parkway. Lest I ever drive on the I95 turnpike - too many scary tractor trailers rolling 80mph on a good day - or stuck in bumper to bumper most days.

Bob

A vibration at 55mph is almost always a tire issue. If it is not at 55 it can be a driveshaft or other.
Check tires first ,the older they get ,the less you can trust them!
