replacing steering box leaking end gasket

It appears the steering box is leaking by the olive and end cover gasket. Will the pin in the worm keep the column from sliding forward when the end cover plate is removed? Or will the bearings disengage and I'll have a problem. What's the procedure?

You can take off the front cover without any consequences, though the forward most ball bearing/race will come out, but it's not a problem. Keep track of the shims...
