Replacing Front Shock Absorbers

I have received rebuilt front shocks and getting ready to install them. I believe I should be able jack up the bottom of the spring pan to relieve the spring pressure enough to remove the shock arm bolt and then remove the shock. I know I can do this with my MGA.

Is this correct thinking?

I think you need to remove the springs. Four 12-in. threaded 3/8" rods and nuts will do. That's what I've always done.

You can do it with a jack, like you said. It will relieve the top trunnion bolt loading, you can remove it and replace the shock.
I just used a floor jack to do this, then put the bolt back so I could use the jack to unload the spring pan and remove the front spring. No long bolts needed to do it, but it would've been easier with the correct tool.
