Replacing Dash

I'm about a week away from attempting to replace the dash on my 73'. I wasnt part of the tear down so dont know the specific order of things. I'm hoping the wiring and gauge cables do not give me too much trouble. I still have some figuring out to do there, but shouldnt cause too much greif.

1. Are there any tips about stuffing the wiring against the cowl wall?
2. Are there any tips about positioning of the loom on the steering column?
3. Is there any general order of things for placing the dash, sequence of attachment? Things to absolutely line up or watch for?

I recovered and assembled my dash out of the car on the bench.

Then sat in car with dash on lap and hooked everything up and tilted dash into place and bolted it in. Only three bolts on the top edge, one in center and one on each end then the two bottom supports.

Of course I was able to do all testing etc before bolting it in. I admit I had to tilt it back onto my lap a few times to get all right.

Was a very pleasent job setting in my "new" car and working setting down at my speed.
 
Once you've got it stretched out, the wiring loom should pretty much show you where it attaches to the firewall.
 
Yes, one step at the time, with a little patience, and enjoyment of the process. I havnt picked up a battery yet, I probably should for testing purposes before fixing the dash to the cowl assembly (I havnt started yet).

A few of the metal 'fold-over pieces for holding the wiring loom in place were broken off. The PO left a bag of about 10 oblong shaped plastic pieces to go around the loom, that stick to the car to substitute. Any thughts on using these, as compared to using a screw and some other wiring clip?
I peeled back a corner of the non-stick paper over the adhesive pad to test it.....it seems to be one of those 'stick forever' adhesives!

The adhesive should be fine. New cars for example have lots of adhesive holding them together.
 
Clean the mounting surfaces with something solvent and potent...I have not had the best luck with these stick-on wire ties on cars. Surfaces that get hot don't seem to do well, and all the underdash locations get hot :smile:
