Replacing an exhaust donut

On the way home the other day I suddenly heard an awful racket. Took a nano second to realize it was ME! Seems I blew the exhaust donut of which I only have one on the 78B. My question: Does anyone know if the donut can be found at local Auto Parts stores? I'm guessing that it is not and that I will have to order from Brit Vic or Moss but would prefer getting it locally. Any one know? Meanwhile I have to drive the Buick and that's no fun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif.

I suspect Bret will be along soon...seems to me he had experience (and a lengthy thread) on this a while ago, and learned a lot about the donuts.

Hi Guinn,

Yup! I know that problem oooh so well. But I don't know for sure if you can get them at the local parts store or not - but I would try there first before going to VB or Moss & pick up a few extra (they're cheap insurance). Also check the hardware and replace it if it puts up any kind of a fight while trying to remove it. You'll thank me later.

As for the doughnut: Check the condition of it before you toss it. It might be OK and just need the hardware to be tightened up. Also take this opportunity to "double" nut the mounting hardware. After the fourth of fifth time of it working itself loose I just added an extra nut behind the first and I haven’t had a problem in about almost a year.

Oh & here's the “Lengthy Tread” (Ranting actually /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) that Bruce mentioned. Who knows you might find some of it useful.

Good luck,

Durnit! I've at least three of those animals just lyin' about. One in every "Payen" engine gasket set. Wish ya could just shove 'em thru this innernet thingie, and Guinn'd have a lifetime supply!

Give Autosport at 2121 Westlake Ave in Seattle a call 206-6211940. Brad may have one or can order one from Moss and save you the min order and freight.

While the exhaust gaskets are known to go out now and then, they should not go out suddenly. This suggests to me that your manifold was not tightened evenly, and one side was tighter on the gasket than the other. Other possible causes are damaged, bent or worn mating surfaces on the pipes or a damaged gasket.

Lots of good advise. Thank you all and I will reply after all is fixed, but that might be a month from now.
