TR4/4A Replacement Front Shocks

Hi All,

As far as I can tell, the front shocks on my 1966 TR4A are original to the car and definitely seen better days. So, I am considering replacing them.

The decision is whether to just order a stock part number from one of the big three (~$50 per pair) or go for the upgrade with GAZ, Spax or Koni (~$225-$350 pair)? Are the stock shocks really that bad? Alternatively, are the upgrades that good?

My driving is mostly gentle Sunday drives on two lane back country roads. But, occasionally when I hit a pot hole or hit a really rough patch of road the front "crashes" pretty hard - as if the full travel in the suspension being used up. It's those crashes I'm looking to resolve.

Thanks gents,

Bob

I've altered my suspension with GoodPart springs but stayed with the stock shocks (new) and it all works well together. My driving may be a bit more aggressive than you. Those improved shocks may make you feel better but will only lighten your wallet.

Bob, if stock lasted this long, what more could you ask. You only need the upgrades if you are going for a track day or Solo II, autocross. Even then just not worth the money, the effort to put them in is the same.

I have two TR4's and have Koni's on one and stock shocks on the other. I don't feel the difference. Additionally I have tube shocks on the rear of the one with Koni's and stock levers on the other car. There is just not any perceptible difference in normal driving. I might add that my normal driving is a bit spirited.
