I just got a new heater control valve. For practice I tried to take off an old control valve from a spare engine and the darrn thing broke off in the adapter. So my question is : Is it better to try to get the old one off and risk the same problem or shoild I drill out the rivet, spin off the top and replace the guts with the pieces of the new one.
Comments and questions will be appreciated

Update: What a worry wart I am. The thing twisted off like it was greased. Well sometimes things work out. Thanks to all for your best wishes.

If you have a new one and you can replae the old one. I think you are ahead of the game. The old housings are usually full of crap and difficult to clean properly even if you get them off. -Just -MOP

Just ask yourself what happens if it breaks while you are driving down the road; and I think my answer will be clear.

The "adapter" is just a 45 degree street elbow, so you should be able to source a (temporary) replacement at any plumbing supply. Some "PTFE paste" (aka Teflon pipe dope) on the threads will both make it seal easier and help ensure it comes off cleanly next time.

Did the same thing permanently as Randall suggested. A lot easier to replace the control valve later on down the road.

The problem with this is that the old adapter won't come off as it is blocked by the head stud next to it. I could probably saw enough of it off to get the rest of it to unscrew but it seems like a lot of work. I think that what I am going to do is heat it up, spritz it with WD-40 and see if I can get the valve off without breaking it.
I played around with the spare engine and I drilled the broken part out. I think that a pipe tap would renew the threads so that is my backup plan.
Thanks everyone
