Replace Head Gasket?

I have my exhaust and intake manifolds off whilst I wait for a replacement exhaust manifold to become available and I am wondering if I should go ahead and replace the head gasket. The only indication I have that there may be a problem with the current head gasket is oil stains where the head meets the block. I have a new gasket sitting on the shelf so the real question is: will I only be stepping into new troubles if I go ahead and replace the gasket? Is the devil I know better than the devil I don't?

I replied under the MG forum. The only new troubles you find will be those already there and taking care of them now will avoid having to pull the head later.

Yes, but ignorance can be soooo blissful.

Thanks again, Mike.

Do a compression check.

Is there oil in your coolant?

Is there water in your oil?

I'd leave well enough alone if there aren't any of these other problems. If the head gasket is leaking oil to the outside I'd suspect one or more of these others too. What of the valve cover gasket?

Is there anything else you'd be better off doing?
