Cheap arse rental!
Ok as some of you know I rent quite a few vehicles. Well I’ve rented some pretty fun cars and more than my share of baggers (hey they are rentals after all). But in the world of rentals you never know for sure what you’re going to get.
This weeks rental was nothing to brag about either.
It’s a brand new Jeep Commander. Black on Black & kind of looks like a H3 Hummer if you squint your eyes. Well I’ve driven an H2 and a H3 and let me assure you as much as I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Jeeps – this has to be the worse and Hummer has nothing to worry about here.
Lets start with the lame lawn char seating. For what is suppose to be Jeep’s upscale SUV offering – it is totally uncomfortable for even the shortest of distances. Ergonomics is goofy & down right annoying with nothing but the basics within easy reach. Example: At 5’11” I ain’t short but I have to scoot forward in the drivers seat (interesting at 75mph) to reach the sunvisor and lean over to reach the stereo or HVAC controls.
Driving is a chore. Despite better than six hours behind the wheel today I still can’t get a feel for what the auto box transmission wants to do. Hit any kind of incline and the transmission gets stupid. Try to anticipate it – and it gets even stupider. Sure it’s got one of those “slap-matic” manual modes, but it has to be the worst I’ve ever driven.
Handling was ok – if you’re used to driving big RVs or tractor trailer. I swear my full size F150 4x4 (a much larger vehicle) and it feels more sporty than the Jeep does. Oh of course it’s – cinderblock aerodynamics meant that even the slightest cross wind on the interstate, was going to make you feel like you where driving the family barn.
Final assessment – Cheap, cheap, cheap! From the hood that constantly vibrates & chatters at speeds above 55mph and it’s boxy looks that only the lonely Maytag washing machine repairman could appreciate.
Ok I feel much better now. Still I have to wonder - who buys these things?
