Rental Car Rant!

Cheap arse rental!

Ok as some of you know I rent quite a few vehicles. Well I’ve rented some pretty fun cars and more than my share of baggers (hey they are rentals after all). But in the world of rentals you never know for sure what you’re going to get.

This weeks rental was nothing to brag about either.

It’s a brand new Jeep Commander. Black on Black & kind of looks like a H3 Hummer if you squint your eyes. Well I’ve driven an H2 and a H3 and let me assure you as much as I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Jeeps – this has to be the worse and Hummer has nothing to worry about here.

Lets start with the lame lawn char seating. For what is suppose to be Jeep’s upscale SUV offering – it is totally uncomfortable for even the shortest of distances. Ergonomics is goofy & down right annoying with nothing but the basics within easy reach. Example: At 5’11” I ain’t short but I have to scoot forward in the drivers seat (interesting at 75mph) to reach the sunvisor and lean over to reach the stereo or HVAC controls.

Driving is a chore. Despite better than six hours behind the wheel today I still can’t get a feel for what the auto box transmission wants to do. Hit any kind of incline and the transmission gets stupid. Try to anticipate it – and it gets even stupider. Sure it’s got one of those “slap-matic” manual modes, but it has to be the worst I’ve ever driven.

Handling was ok – if you’re used to driving big RVs or tractor trailer. I swear my full size F150 4x4 (a much larger vehicle) and it feels more sporty than the Jeep does. Oh of course it’s – cinderblock aerodynamics meant that even the slightest cross wind on the interstate, was going to make you feel like you where driving the family barn.

Final assessment – Cheap, cheap, cheap! From the hood that constantly vibrates & chatters at speeds above 55mph and it’s boxy looks that only the lonely Maytag washing machine repairman could appreciate.

Ok I feel much better now. Still I have to wonder - who buys these things?

People who want to fit in - or trying to
impress their neighbors/friends,etc.

Truthfully as I said before I've always liked Jeeps. But if I was looking for a vehicle to impress folks let me assure you that this one wouldn't even make my list. However if I was going to buy one I'd probably get an old CJ or a Wrangler.

Maybe it's aimed at the Hummer-wannabes!!
The only Jeeps I ever liked were the old CJs (other than '40s vintage "real" Jeeps!)!

It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand

Hey be nice! :smirk:

Like I said I like Jeeps, I really like the new 4d Wrangler Unlimited. I just don't like the Commander nor the Liberty.

I am just teasing you, that is one of their slogans.

Like "there's only one Jeep"

Oh I knew that I just forgot to put a smiley face in my reply.

Fixed it!

Why would anyone in their right mind rent a jeep.
Why would anyone own 1.

I love my CJ5.... Liked my 85 Cherokee too. Have sat in a Liberty. blech! Commander, not even.
Someday I want one of the old "Grand Wagoneers" either burgandy or dark blue, with the woodgrain, like you'd see in an LL Bean catalog.( I think I just want it to put my canoe on top)
It is a Jeep thing, there is only one "Jeep". and it's the CJ/Wrangler series. the others are SUVs with the Jeep name.
But there's also Land Rovers, FJ40s, Samauris, Power Wagons and first gen. Broncos to name a few, that were really cool too.

Bret,

I have nothing against Jeeps,I'm just tired
of seeing all these new SUVs bought by people who
will never use 4WD,just buy them to be trndy.
I usually get interested in these type of vehicles-
- after they're 20 + years old.I could go for a
Grand Wagoneer now, just because it'd make a great tow vehicle.

Spoken like someone who has never had the opportunity to take one off-road, through the woods, and just keep going!

I mean why would anyone in their right mind own an LBC? :hammer:
(I know, I know...NONE of us ARE in our right mind!!!) :jester:

Ain't it the truth, Mike??

Got my first Jeep Wrangler back in 1971 as a heavy construction vehicle.
I was hooked immediately. I've never been stranded, on or off road, in a Wrangler.
My latest Jeep is the Wrangler 65 Anniversary Special edition. It sees a fair
share of 4X4 use. Swims well in saltwater as well.

I've always owned a Jeep and will probably die with one parked out front.

You should ride in some of the taxi´s I´ve been in over the last couple of days...the one today, I swear everytime we hit a bump I thought the rear strut would fall out (& I was sitting over it!) ...& 40kmph was about top speed...& no AC so all the windows were down.

Wow!! Tony & Mickey !!

A few of our taxis DO also have windows.

But 40 kph speeds from a taxi??
You have to be jesting us!

The local Bayamon Cab Service might hit 2 kph
on a downhill run.

31 klicks from airport to hotel guys!
This is gonna be fun.

Quiz: 2 passengers and 1 driver. Spot the cab driver, yet?
hehehehe !
