Latest on the 59 Bugeye:
The PO spent a small fortune having this nice motor built.
The serial number is missing, but the side of the block as a 12G cast into it. Does anyone know what displacement that might have originally meant? Anyway, it alwasy leaked oil. NO, it POURED oil out the back of the engine.
So he sells the car because of a lot of reasons, this being one of them. And I pull the motor to figure out what's up. Well, that fancy oil "seal" was not sealing. I think it relies on the flywheel bolts also being sealed at the threads, and as best I can tell this is where the oil was coming out, since it was plentiful on the clutch side of the flywheel, but dry on the front side.
Anyway, the whole seal arragement looked like it had about six different critical sealing points, any of which if not installed perfectly with the goop and stuff will cause a failure.
So I ditched the whole thing and put the slinger half ring back on. Just like it is in the book. OK, it might leak a little like the old days, but not pour out like this car was doing. We will see. Here's hoping.
If anyone is intrested, for a few bucks to drop it in the mail I will send you the seal kit. Maybe you know better how to install it than the last mechanic. They are a $199 part at Mini Mania.
