TR2/3/3A removing sending unit from tank of TR-3.

I need to adjust the float lever on the sending unit as mine reads 1/4; when the tank is empty. I have attached a wire to the arm and do get a Full reading when I raise it to the top. Pushing it to the bottom gives me a 1/4 reading. I have managed to remove the 6 screws holding the unit in, but can't get it out as the unit is bigger then the distance above the tank. HPIM2026.jpg

When I took the sending unit out of my TR6, I removed all the bolts holding the tank in and then it was possible to rotate the tank further out so there was room to remove the sending until.
Welcome to the BCF! By the way, I've done some flying at the Seminole Lake Gliderport.... right in your backyard.

Are you certain that better readings cannot be achieved through adjustment of the gauge?

Here's some good detail on that (for an MGA but same gauge):

He made a tester to do this but I just bundled a bunch of various relays from Radio Shack to crudely create the various positions. I suppose one could simply match the adjustment to the sender that is in place.

Thanks,

I got another reply also suggesting the loosening of the tank bolts; my project for the afternoon!

I have a friend who lives in a Fly-in community in Lake City. He has a Stearman, which we both fly back and forth from the airport in Oakland. I used to have a 172 that we built a tow rig for, used to give tows to the gliders out of Monroe, Ga.

I have a 1957 TR3 (not TR3A) and just took my sender out by carefully tilting it to one side, then the other. You did not say the year of your car - there were different tanks over the life of the TR3/TR3A series.

Mine is a 57 too. I rocked it every which way, but still could not get the sender out. The book says push it out towards the front. I have the straps removed and will attempt to push it forward enough to get the sender out.

GEO can be correct because I just did what you did and the problem was in the gauge. When I took out my broken original sending unit out about 10 years ago I had to loosen the straps and tilt the tank forward to get it out and it looks a lot like yours . However I had to recently replace the replacement unit I got from VB and it was designed differently then the original and came right out. After replacing the wiring harness and cleaning the inside of the gauge this year I must have bent the needle.

Not sure how much it will move with the cap and rubber hose still attached to the tank neck...

Cheers

Success! Thanks for all the tips. After loosening the straps and removing the cap, I was able to remove the last two screws and wiggle it out. Adjustment, per Barry, worked and now I know when I'm about to run out of gas.
