Removing oil sludge

Went to check on the valve adjustment today, and maybe I just didn't notice this the last time I had the valve cover off, but there's some tar-like gunk collected on the cylinder head around cylinders #2 and #3. Maybe this is just normal for LBCs, but does anybody have some ideas on cleaning it safely?

I would try a narrow blade putty knife or slot screwdriver. To keep it from migrating down into the lower end as much as possible. And of course lots of rags.

yep, just goop. I think it comes from when the engine is running and not up to temp but I could be wrong. Always seems to be some.

Thanks gents, guess maybe that's a spring project. Sounds like a better plan then trying to use some of the solvent cleaners I see advertised that get added to the oil. Who knows what those can clog up if all the gunk comes loose over a short time.
