Removing inner tie rod

How do you remove the inner tie rod ends/balls from the rest of the rack on a B?
 
there are tab washers and LARGE ball-and-socket retainers holding 'em in place.
 
I notice there is a cap that the ball is sitting in that prevents if from pulling out. There are slots in said cap another caps fits over it but is much thinner and edges of other cap are pushed into slots. Does this all make sense?
