Removing Grease Cups

Any suggestions for removing grease cups from wire wheel hub on a 70 B ? Can I just grab the threaded stud and pull or try to pry around the edge of the cap. I assume if I tear something up, cap can be replaced.

Gary....on the back of the cylinder head is a long head bolt nut (if the car was originally a wire wheel car)...about 3" or so long & threaded on the free end....take it off the head & screw the free end over the stud on the dust cap...put a bolt that matches the head threads in the other end(I have one with a T-handle welded on it) &, using a socket, unscrew the cap!!!

I think I am going to disagree with Tony!! He has done waaaaay more than me, but, if my memory serves me right, it is is 5/16 NF thread, and it pulls straight out. I was looking for one in the house, and of course I can't find it, but I am sure it does not unscrew, but comes out with a slidehammer or something like that!! I may be wrong, but that would be a first!!

If I remember correctly, I welded a nut onto a bolt (upside down) and screwed it on, and yanked it with visegrips! It has been a couple of years, but I usually remember pretty good!

Gary, my young son...let me explain to you the facts of life....
...yes, the dust cap just pulls straight off! However, that sucker is tight! So, you take that long head nut & screw it onto the stud on the end of the cap...then, you put a long bolt in the other end of the nut (or, if you've made a trick tool like me, screw it in) that protrudes out of the hub...if you can figure out a way to hammer it out, go for it...me, I'd just put a ratchet on that extension & start "loosening"....true, there's no threads to 'loosen' but the process of turning the cap backs it up a bit so its free from all the grease, etc holding it in to where you can then pull it straight out....also, I believe the inner race of the hub is angled just a bit to snug the cap into itself....
....oh, I've seen caps where somebody 'hammered' on them to get them out...did you know they rip easily? &, that stud will pull right out of them!

Thanks for clarifying that, old boy!! See, if you had written it clearly in the beginning, you would have saved me some typing!!

You're correct, Gary....I assumed some basic knowledge (I must always remember what assume spells: ass - u - me) & also forgot I'd have some of my Canuck buddies reading...
