Removeable luggage racks with leather straps?

Anyone know what I'm talking about? The rack sits on the straps?

There's a thread on it on the MGB board with a couple photos. I would love to make one like that for my MGA. I hate racks and would never drill holes in the boot for one but sometimes it would be nice to be able to have one on the car for extra luggage. MGAs have very, very little storage space.

Drillin' holes about anyplace on LBC's at this point in their lives is sinful IMHO. Especially for one-a them HATEFUL luggage racks. That's why we have a beautiful matched set of "Italian Peasant Luggage": Paper grocery bags of diff'rent sizes...eminently malleable. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

~I~ can SAY that. I'm progeny of Italian peasants. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Steve, yea, I saw the thread over there, couldn't remember where I heard them 'talking' about this so I posted over here too. Because I don't want to drill a rack into Binabox, but with a stowaway top, spare tire & tools, will be little space for luggage when we travel. And I like the looks of it. I'll post the pic here.

The ony Janel is talking about has leather op riveted to the bottom of the straps....it hooks over the front edge of the trunk & the bottom edge...then, the buckle holds it tight on the trunk....best I can tell from the photo.

With a stowaway top you gain the space behind the seats for luggage. It doesn't take away anything! If you need lockable storage, just put the stowaway where the fold-down top would go. It still takes up less space than the fold-down anyway.

I like the looks of that, on an early car. I'd do something like this if I could figure out how.

Easy, Janel...order the rack from Moss...pop rivet on the belts that have chromed hooks on either end...open trunk install hooks, close trnk, buckle belt tight to hold hooks against trunk edges!

That's about what I thought too Tony, sounds too simple though!!!

Tandy Leather for the over size belts and buckles. Otherwise a saddle maker and ask for ladago straps.

Seriously LL, that's it? I can make one?

Sweet!!!

Yes, you may need to line the bottom of the strap after you bolt the luggage rack to the leather. I could do research in my catalogs and find the clips that would go over the trunk lid. The buckles are available in many styles and should not be too expensive. We used pig skin for liners on saddles and a diamond shaped needle in the sewing machine. Yes, it is very doable. I'll look around and see if I can ge a hold of a luggage rack to experiment with.

FWIW- the sheep's wool backings I see on Morgan hood straps might be a good idea to prevent chaffing the paint.

As would a short hidden piece of elastic on the hook connections to keep it tight? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

First off, I came back to the BCF after a long hiatus (It was Janel's hooters that got my attention). I have the stow away top and I like it especially for what an increase I get in useable and accessible luggage space. You get the entire area behind you wide open. We keep out two large bags back there on the road and it is nice to be able to get into them on the fly. Dave Raiche's rack straps are very cool and I should ask him how he did it.

Carl...YEA! We've been waiting on you...when you find out, tell us - Janel needs one to carry her hooters on!

HEY! Ya'll leave my hooters out of this.

Hiya Carl! YES! Please please PLEASE ask Dave how he did it (details, man, details) or if he bought the set up! I think that's going to look sweet on Binabox, so period perfect on an older car!

Don't you lose trunk space though? I crammed a fair amount of 'essentials' in Emma's trunk for our 4 day trip to Twist's party over the summer. I know that wouldn't fit behind the seats.

You still have a great deal of space in the trunk as the top rolled up is maybe 12-15" around and the length of the header rail. I have Top bag and that helps. The hood sticks I have loose and they go where they fit best. Wjen we go for a show weekend like Stowe we pack very heavy and we have never had an issue.
