Hi...have a 1980 mgb and plan to drive it in a couple of weeks from now from central Illinois to southern Florida, Pompano Beach area. Does anyone have experience with not using a thermostat in their car? I have seen a part from Moss that you use in lieu of the thermostat, something they call a bypass blanking sleeve, # 434-135. Any advice is appreciated...car has 40,000 miles on it...and runs very well. tires, wheels, brakes, exhaust, fluids, all are in good shape. any recommendations on other specific things to look at before starting the trip?
 
WHY put a blanking plate in place of the 'stat?!?!
 
I might be more inclined to swap it for a higher temp thermostat.
 
With only 40K miles and running OK, I'd be more inclined to check the temp sending unit on the radiator & make sure the electric fans work. Lots of other reasons a car will run hot on a long haul, lean carb mixture and timing. But if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Based on the question, I don't see a need to remove the TS....imho.

Figgered as much. I was picturing a plate that blocked off the flow completely. The sleeve is ~supposedly~ designed to allow some bypass. Agree completely about putting in a lower-temp rated 'stat.
 
I shoulda said "restrictor plate". Different sized openings allow flow to be "adjusted" so coolant doesn't just rush thru the rad (as it would without anything in place of the t'stat) without exchanging heat.
 
Old "racer's rick". Takes some experimenting, too. every engine is different.
 
Used them alot in racing, very tricky to do before laser thermometers. Would not advise as above for street. I used a 180 deg thermostat in a GT6 for winter and changed to a 160 deg for summer and trips. Same with the older Jag 140 I had.
