How the heck do I remove this stuff without killing myself...? My car buddy told me this old 1958 BN6 Heatshield
material is asbestos and very dangerous.. What do I do call a hazmat squad to my house?

If it's original, it will contain asbestos. Asbestos can cause damage to your lungs if you breath in its dust. Other than that, it's not particularly dangerous. It's less dangerous than a lot of stuff you probably have around your house. The key is to not generate and breath dust.

The heatshield comes off by removing the screws and fender washers that hold it to the firewall. Get it wet first so you minimize dust, and take the screws out. Have a plastic bag ready to put the heatshield in. If you get any pieces on the floor, wet the area and sweep them up. When you have all the pieces off and in bags, put them in a second bag. Then you can throw them away.

Asbestos is a naturally-occuring mineral. It makes up serpentine, the California State Rock (which also contains mercury).

Right, brush by hand and do not use a vacuum-cleaner, chance is it will spread dust after taking the particles up

:iagree: with all above. If you have the motor oout of the car and aare doing a complete resto, I hose it all down first then remove it by cutting the screws off. Don't forget there's another piece under the carbs. I used "hardi-back" white paneling available at Home Depot to replace it. Or you can order from Moss etc. Later models also had a piece above the muffler bolted to the floor pan.

Bottom line, wear a good mask, keep it all wet, bag it carefully and throw away. Good advice to not vacummn.

Gentlemen,

Here in California asbestos is considered hazardous waste. Once you remove it (as described in the posts above), it needs to be double bagged in 6 mil plastic bags and sealed with duct tape. It then needs to be taken (Free of charge) to your local hazardous waste disposal center (The same place that takes all the used electronic equipment).

In California it cannot be thrown in the trash!! The minimum fine is $5000 and possible jail time!!

Mitch, the closest one to Long Beach is in San Pedro:
GAFFEY STREET
1400 N. Gaffey St.
San Pedro, CA 90731
1-800-98-TOXIC (1-800-988-6942)
It is recommended that you call the Center first, to make sure that they accept the materials that you want to dispose of.

I've got my old ones bagged and ready to go!!
