Approximately 40 Spitfires and Hurricanes (and a single Blenheim) will take off from Goodwood to celebrate Battle of Britain day and spend the day criss-crossing southern England. Unfortunately (for me) they won't be coming close to where I work (next door to Luton Airport).

Saw this last year at Goodwood. Very stirring stuff. There was also a huge motorcade of D-day survivors in classic military vehicles. All this alone made Goodwood a great trip. I'd recommend it to anyone. Here's a short video I shot:

:iagree: Nice to see there's still an appreciation for what those fellas had to do. Aircrews suffered heavier percentage of losses than Allied ground-pounders. Astounding.

Battle of Britain is held in the same kind of esteem as the Battle of Trafalgar and the defeat of the Spanish Armada in terms of its significance in British history. I wish the same could be said in this country. If you asked someone about Midway, most people would probably answer "Midway to what?".

As critical and bloody and heroic as the Battle of Midway was, it was in a far away place against an enemy that had attacked the furthest border of our country's frontier.

The BoB was fought directly overhead of Britain's population for all to see, hear and feel against an enemy that was bombing the heartland and poised to overrun the entire country (as they had the continent) if the battle was lost.

It's pretty easy to take that personally.
