"Remember, remember, the fifth of November"

November 5th is celebrated in the UK to commemorate the failed "gunpowder plot" to blow up the House of Lords in 1605. Guy Fawkes was the one who was caught in the cellars of the building with 1800lbs of gunpowder on this date.

He and his co-conspirators were executed in the grisly fashion reserved for traitors at that time, that of hanging, drawing and quartering..... Look it up! :crazy:

Every year on November 5th the British light bonfires, some of them enormous, and burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes on the top of it. The "Guy" is stuffed with straw or newspaper, dressed in old clothes, and trundled around town by the local kids collecting money, hence "penny for the Guy"........ It celebrates the preservation of democracy. Thyere are fireworks, lots of fireworks, and street parties, the whole ball o'wax.

“Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder, treason and plot,
I know of no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.”

I remember being in Regents Park (London) on Guy Fawkes night as a kid.

We would wrap potatoes in foil and put them at the bottom of the bonfire where they could be found easily, and after an hour or so they would be done to perfection.... Mmmmmmmmmmm!

We attended the annual Guy Fawkes party last Saturday at a house in a semi-rural location. They are not allowed to set off aerial fireworks and one year someone called the cops. Imagine the look on their faces when they came into the back yard to see about fifty middle age people instead of a few kids with firecrackers. The cops were good about it and a bit embarrassed at telling the owner to stop. Each year we burn a different Guy; we've had Saddam and Bin Laden previously. They went back to Guy this year because of the election.

For you ex-pats, "Light up the sky with Standard fireworks".

The only thing we ever found at the bottom of our bonfires was melted tarmac :laugh:

We used to build ours on open land, unpaved. I suppose that helped..... :wink:

We're not allowed open fires here, however we'll be attending our friends annual 'barbeque'in his garden on Saturday night. It usually consists of a twelve foot high stack of wood with an effigy plopped on top! Curiously, the only things that ever get cooked on that BBQ are the blackened potatoes. Side order of black peas and treacle toffee please! I think that the local Gendarmes may have latched on, but so far they've turned a blind eye....
