I am working on a '77 MGB which has not turned a wheel since 1986. All the rubber is in a shocking state so I am replacing the suspension bushes etc. I originally planned to disassemble the king pins, clean and reassemble. I figured that the wear would not be too bad if the car was only used for 9 years.
That was before I started taking things apart. After a lot of hammering and some colourful language, I finally got the vertical link off the wishbones, but the top trunnion is pretty messed up inside its bore. I cannot find any way to get it off the king pin, and my friend managed to mess up the threads at the top of the king pin using a large hammer... So, I found a refurbished king pin assembly on ebay, and bought it last night.
Now I am looking at the other side and reckon it will be just as bad. Assuming we are more careful and don't damage threads, is there any way to clean up the trunnion, or is it just worth sourcing a refurbished king pin assembly for the other side too? Anyone know where I could get just one assembly, since I already have the one I got on ebay? After I won the auction it occurred to me that all the parts catalogues seem to list these as sold as pairs... Anyone have a spare refurbished passenger side king pin assembly?
