Refilling your tranny

If any of you, for whatever reason, feel the need to drain the oil from your transmission, when it comes time to refill, a word of caution: make sure you add enough oil. I, after having my tranny/engine out, had to refill. I load a large plastic medical syringe, tipped with a long piece of vinyl tubing, and pump away with 30 wt. NON-detergent motor oil (Valvoline) till it weeps out the side fill hole. The word of caution is, especially (and maybe only if) you have an overdrive, you didn't fill it all the way. I drove the car enough to engage the overdrive unit, pulled back in and checked my oil level by attempting to add more. I ended up adding almost a whole pint more oil! The overdrive unit (mine is J-type) circulates the oil and thus requires more.

Just a note of caution.

Re: Refilling attyour tranny

John at Quantum runs his on a bench unit to test and then tops them off.

Good advice, Bill.

How's it going so far?

Re: Refilling attyour tranny

Another tool for filling the tranny or diff., if you don't have a pneumatic pump, is a little hand pump availble at Tru Valu hardware. It screws onto an oil container and has the plastic tubing already attached. It cost about $3-4.
It has made the job considerably easier.

Re: Refilling attyour tranny

You're right Bill.

All the overdrives have pistons and accumulators, along with a number of passageways, that need to fill up with oil during operation. So, it's important to run briefly, engaging and disengaging the OD, then recheck the oil level, top up as needed... just as you did.

The gearbox without an O/D unit doesn't have these hydraulically related voids in it, but it's still a good idea to double check the fill level right after a very brief test run.

Cheers!
