Refilling Shocks [Dampeners] ??

Hello All:

I've read many posts using the "search" function and just am not grasping the re-fill the dampener. I've looked and nothing is obvious on where to pull the plug. I've read both manuals that I have and nothing other than refill it -- great, but where ??

If anyone could share a picture or I have a link to the Moss picture:

Maybe someone could briefly describe how to drain / refill these guys.

Item #1 in the diagram. Look at the rear upper left and you will see the "plug" (very large bolt). The rear shocks have a similar 'plug'(next page) at the left bottom of #8. Under the 'plugs' you will find a valving unit and under that a spring & possibly a washer on top of the spring (not normal). To properly drain a shock you will have to remove it, remove the plug, remove the valve unit & spring. Take the shock and hold it over a catch can and let what will drain, drain. Then begin working the arm up and down with the hole pointing down-wards this will pump the rest out. There is also a small bolt on the opposite end from the 'plug' end that can be removed to aid draining. After it is drained take some light oil and refill the shock by putting it in a vise with the plug hole pointing up and so you can work the arm up and down. Start putting in either the new shock oil or some flushing oil. Fill the 'plug' hole and then begin working the arm up & down slowly to work the oil into the shock, keep adding oil until it will take no more, replace the spring/valve unit/'plug and the small bolt.

Is it possible to do this without taking the shocks off the car? Could you fill and then gently raise/lower the car to accomplish the same thing?

I managed to refill mine while they were in the car. You could either try raising and lowering the car, or if you can get the arm disconnected from the spring you could move it by hand. I had the springs out at the time I did it, but I never had to remove the shocks. I just took the drain plug out, moved the lever several times to get the old oil out, and refilled with new. I'll admit it would be easier to fill with the shock removed, but I managed with a syringe. You will need to work the lever a few times while filling to bleed the air out.
