Red Light on Dash

George,
I did use grade 8 bolts for the lower bracket. I also drilled the bracket out to accept the 3/8" bolt instead of the 5/16" that the original lucas alternator used. As far as charging it is wonderful. I have about 12.8 volts at idle and 14.4 volts when the rpms get to 1000 or so. I love it. The lights are brighter and if I ever decide to put a radio in there I won't have to worry about power... Thanks for the advice I will certainly keep my eyes on the lower mounting bolt as I will be checking the belt every few miles for the next 500 or so...lol

Like George said, when choosing hardware get the good stuff. On "inch" hex head bolts this is easily determined from the pattern on the head. Look for "tick" marks on the head adjacent to the flats. Add "2" to the number of tick marks and this is the SAE grade of the bolt. (i.e. 3-tick marks plus 2 = Grade-5). Grade-5 bolts are strong, Grade-8 are harder/stronger. Both are available at home centers but you have to look for them. The generic zinc plated bolts are usually Grade-2 or lower and very soft.

Good advice...I put another grade 8 bolt and a spare belt in the boot this afternoon when I got home from work. I figure I better have this at least till I become comfortable that my handi-work actually works...lol
