I recently brought my son's old (17 yrs. old) Cannondale M300 into a respectable bike shop in New Orleans, GNO Cyclery. My wife wants to ride it now and the bike is in remarkable condition. I told them to make it work, without spending the cost of a new bike. No problems, they cleaned it up nicely, changed the brake pads and installed a new derailleur. I got it back and inspected it and found that the front gears, the pedal crank set looked mangled. Called GNO and was a little huffy with them, seeing as I am 2 hours away. I said that several of the teeth looked sheared off and others were split and bent. Little did I know that that is how a crank set is supposed to look. The repairman was really nice, defused me and said this is a common mistake for a novice. He proceeded to tell me exactly how the gears work. I was truly embarrassed and begged his forgiveness over the phone. Thank goodness he was a nice guy. I felt like a dummy.

And as of today, leading the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy bike race), powered by the monster motor of Ivan Basso.

we've all "opened mouth, inserted foot"........... a truly nice guy that can calm things down.
Sounds like you found a good bike shop for that cannondale.

Bill, Couldn't help but smile while reading this post. My shop sees this customer concern/complaint/accusation also - and many of these irate folks go on to become some of our best customers. Those chainrings with the crazy ramps, gouges, and strange tooth profiles really allow the chain to shift up more quickly particularly under pressure. Would also agree with BabaKahawa that you're with the right shop.
