Recommendation for a new top

Hello all,

It's been a while since I've purchased a new top for the car. I was wondering if anyone could give me a recommendation for a less expensive top. I wasn't too happy with the last locally purchased top I had ... it never fit down right on the sides of the car. I think it was a Crown brand, maybe. I'd probably like to get a zip out rear window this time as I've never had one and here in the south that might be nice.

I've seen a range of $175 up to maybe $500. I'd like to stay in the lower end of the range. Things like Robbins and Sun Fast aren't important to me ... can't afford the luxury.

Thanks for any opinions. I'd also welcome any suggestions to stay away from certain brands.

If you didn't like Crown, the next step is Robbins

AA Best (somewhere online, or EZ up tops, again, on line are 2 that I have used in the past. Nice tops, under $200 shipped. and I think EZ has the zip out window.

To be honest Crown is a guess. I think it was 1991 the last time I bought a top. I bought it from a local auto upholstery shop and it just never fit right. Probably shouldn't bad mouth the brand since I'm not really sure if that was correct. What ever I bought was far cheaper than the Aamco(sp?) tops that most were selling at the time.

Tony, are you indicating that Crown is pretty good since the next step is a Robbins?

Has anyone ever heard of AABest(www.aabestco.com)? I've seen them online for a number of years but wasn't previously in the market. Just curious if anyone has used them before. Pretty good looking prices.

Again, appreciate any advice anyone can give.

No, I was a Crown distributor for years but their quality kept getting worse & worse...I never found anything down in that $$ range that was as good or better so I just moved up & because a Robbins distributor as I have a Robbins top that's been on one of my cars for 10 years....When you figure $$$'s over years of use, Robbins comes out pretty cheap!

I recently bought a AAbest top, and I am not very happy with it. The fit is poor, and the seams are already starting to tear. And it is not even 6 months old!

Used AAbest top for my 63. Will not buy one from them again. dose not fit right, sorry I did not spend more and get a good one.

Just my 2 cents

just to add to the mix Convertible Tops Online is probably the least expensive on average that I've seen so far(they list tops for Sprites and Midget MkIIIs too). However, I'd like opinions on thier tops. I'm looking for a top for my 'B , and would like inexpensive, but I'm wary of the old saying, "You get what you pay for"... anyone get a top from these folks? They advertise on eBay quite often.

Thanks folks. Perhaps this isn't the item to go cheap on it sounds like.

I appreciate the input. Any others would be welcome also.
