hello

im new and tackling my first project.
My question involves my bummpers should i rechrome them or replace them
the bumbers are in good condition and i just got done watching "An MG is Born" for the third time and he says that the new chrome bumpers are not good.

any help would be great
thanks Ray

Yup. The rechrome will cost close enough to what we're getting as "new" and will not start pitting three days after they're installed.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gifRe-chrome. The repo's do not have the same finish on the ends. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif

I agree, if they are in good condition a quality re-chrome will be much better!

ok rechrome is the way to go

and body know of a Chrome shop in Central Wisconsin?

I'll second Vping's vote for Paul's Chrome. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

I had a bunch of original parts rechromed and they are just superb. You'll pay for it, but the quality is second to none (I think I paid $48 for the shift boot surround, will dig out the reciept). Expect to pay multiples of that for a bumper.

Send them your parts, they send back photos, estimates and a contract. Wait 4~6 weeks and you'll be amazed.

The Hemmings crowd swears by them.

Edit, just found the contract, these are 01 prices:

shift boot: $42
door mirror stalk: $40
door mirror base: $50
bumper: $275 x 2

Great info im going to the body shop to Photograpgh my bumpers to see if they are oem

thanks

I'm gonna be the dissenting voice here - the new reproductions from Moss are pretty darn close to the original & hold up very well...for anything other than a garage queen show car, I'd go that route instead of spending twice the amount on rechroming! That leaves more $$'s for other things!

I have Moss bumpers and find nothing wrong with them. They look great. I'd buy them again. PJ

well thats it im going to get the Moss bumpers unless mine are orignals

thanks everybody

I heard that Moss retooled their chrome bumpers. But I have seen some poor older Moss repros .. that looked bad, poor fit, slight twist. I will reserve judgement on the newer ones til I see another newer one.

I would tend to error on the safe side and rechrome originals regardless of cost...as they are known to fit well and are good quality.

I have just had way too many quality issues with aftermarket parts fitting, quality, finish, etc. Original parts tend to fit right..some select aftermarket parts need to be made to fit..or don't at all. There are some good aftermarket parts that excel over stock.. part of the MG parts game /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But bumpers.. I would lean toward rechroming, unless the repros have dramatically improved.

Paul

Moss re-tooled a couple years ago and now produce a very high quality product. Their old bumpers are still out there being sold by some resellers. They did not look right or fit right, were too light and the chrome was poor. See the link I posted above for a comparison of original, old Moss and new Moss.

Hi If you have a good set of original bumpers there is not an aftermarket set of bumpers out there that can match those when properly replated. Replate, Replate , Replate---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Make sure that you check the plating company out thoroughly. If you can get testimonials or recommendations as to the quality of the workmanship from people, so much the better. Not all plating shops do a good job, so you need to be careful.

I was talking with the owner of a body shop that specializes in building hot rods and custom cars. He's the one who painted my car. I asked him about having parts chromed. He said the most important thing in the chroming process is to pay extra and have the part copper plated first then chromed. Some places supposedly do this automaticly. ?? PJ
