Rebuilt Engine Breakin Procedure

The machine shop just finished rebuilding my BJ8 engine. It should be back in the car in another week. As far as break in procedure goes, the machine shop recommends using 30 wt oil for break in. Try to vary the rpms up and down constantly for the first 500 miles, and don't rev it real high. After 500 miles change the oil, retorqued the head and readjust the valves. Use 30 wt again for another 1000-1500 miles and then switch to 20-50 wt. Experts, do you agree with that? Should I do anything else? Thanks.

Skip, I have only done a couple hundred motors but I would flat say change the FILTER at 500 miles. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Also, have never used anything bur Castrol 20-50 fossil oil for all LBC motors/

Ed, Yes the filter will be changed with the oil at 500 miles. I should have been clearer about that, but I always change the filter when I change the oil. I, too like the Castrol 20-50 oil, but was interested that the machine shop said use 30 wt for the break in period. Then switch to 20-50 at the second change of oil. I assume they feel the 30 wt is better to seat the rings, although I don't personally know why.
